Maybe it would make sense to move the original upstream makefile to something like Makefile.upstream and add a simple wrapper Makefile, so that the wrapper Makefile calls Makefile.upstream (and both lme and debian/rules call the Makefile wrapper only). Anyway, added as is, let's see if it can improved later.
