Well, I tried going back to the original configuration (no alsa-base, no
sound device) and running the postinst by hand, and I haven't gotten it
to hang again like that.

ALSA lib conf.c:3982:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2145:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
mpd: asyncns.c:706: handle_response: Assertion `length == resp->length' failed.

There is a few seconds delay between the second and third lines, but not
the several minutes (IIRC) hang I saw the first time.

If I run mpd by hand, I get:

No "audio_output" defined in config file
Attempt to detect audio output device
Attempting to detect a alsa audio device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function
snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat

ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer
returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3982:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2145:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
Error opening default alsa device: No such device
Attempting to detect a oss audio device
Error opening OSS device "/dev/dsp": No such file or directory

Attempting to detect a pulse audio device
mpd: asyncns.c:706: handle_response: Assertion `length == resp->length' failed.
zsh: abort      mpd --no-daemon --stdout

Looks to me like the hang I saw may have been when it was trying to fall
back to pulse audio. Perhaps that hits the network?

I get the same behavior with alsa-base installed and the usb sound not
plugged in.

mpd isn't listening for connections yet so this doesn't connect.
