  As you can see in the screenshot you've sent, there's no mute action for the 
master channel, i.e.: there's not "00" or "MM" square below the volume bar. 
So you can't mute it. This depends on the mixer control definitions in the 
alsa driver for your soundcard.  Probably because your sound card just 
doesn't have it available.

  So if you want to mute the sound you should use another channel, for example 
PCM, in that screenshot you have the PCM channel muted, so you shouldn't hear 
PCM sound ( the most common) as opposed to midi.

  But I think what you want is selecting in kmix another channel for master 
rather than the real master, consider using PCM as master following these 
steps:

 - Right click on the kmix icon on the system tray
 - Select "Select master channel..." (Seleccionar canal maestro)
 - Choose PCM from the list.

  I that way the kmix will use that channel for raising/lowing and muting the 
sound.

  Please, test that.
