  So, I have no experience with dm-crypt, but my suspicions would point
here.  What you're describing *sounds* like the filesystem/block device
is being blocked by heavy disk access and doesn't deal well with it.

I think not, since I reproduced it on my other laptop which has only ext3 on LVM, and no encryption. Also there is no visible disk access when it freezes, at least not after the first run when the data likely already buffered. dm-crypt is also not that CPU intensive on a fast machine.

But it does seem like some kind of kernel scheduling issue, or perhaps something in X.org. Would an strace help?
