Could you run mandb with the --debug option and send me the output? (It may be quite large; if so, please compress it.) Could you build man-db with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt, run 'sudo env MALLOC_CHECK_=3 gdb --args src/mandb --debug', and get me a backtrace?
