Someone who doesn't like reading my book length novels replied to an nvidia how-to thread in the debian forum I had been kvetching about this in.

I tried going to /usr/src and tar xvjf virtualbox-ose.tar.bz2 after letting Aptitude update the stuff.

Module Assistant still unpacks the older deb and warns during auto-install that it is downgrading to the older version.

I upgraded again and this time was saved by the Debian Wiki article on Virtualbox.

I cd to the /usr/src/modules/virtualbox-ose after having untarred the new package.

make
make install

Magic! This worked, and I could modprobe vboxdrv and it was using the new kernel module.

Most folks will not know to do this, so this is pretty serious until the new stuff from 2.6.23 gets all setup.

I'm sorry if it seems I'm being a pest, but I had no idea how to do this manually like I did. That's module-assistant's job according to nearly every how-to I've seen on the net, except for that Debian wiki. It only suggests this because Etch doesn't have what Lenny and Sid do, modules for virtualbox-ose. I'll go away now and use the thing. Just wanted to let you know how I worked around the problem. And that it is a real problem until the new stuff gets in that works properly.
