Hello,
I think eog should determine the file format by using the magic codes,
if the direct approach via the extension fails. I had the situation,
that I hat a png, that was named problem.jpg. This is what I got:
"Bild »problem.jpg« konnte nicht geöffnet werden.
Fehler beim Lesen einer JPEG-Bilddatei (Not a JPEG file: starts with
0x89 0x50)"
And translated:
"Picture »problem.jpg« could not be opened.
Error while reading an JPEG-Imagefile (...)"
Ironicly nautilus happly produced a thumbnail.
