Seeing not much progress on this issue upstream, a patch on the Debian side would be useful, I think. The variable actually should be TERM=gnome-256color, which is included in the "ncurses-term" package. A dependency on this package should be introduced together with the patch (kterm depends on it as well, so that shouldn't be much of a problem).
