[ upstream author here, not the maintainer ] The xmms-xf86audio plugin is tightly tied to xmms. While it's possible that it could be rewritten to work with another audio player, most others already have the feature this plugin provides. I know audacious does, and last I looked none of the XMMS2 UIs were far enough along to need such a thing.
If xmms does get removed from Debian, then I suggest this package be removed also. -- Devin \ aqua(at)devin.com, IRC:Requiem; http://www.devin.com Carraway \ 1024D/E9ABFCD2: 13E7 199E DD1E 65F0 8905 2E43 5395 CA0D E9AB FCD2
