There is currently nothing that prevents gnus from being installed when emacs22 is installed. And if emacs22 is there gnus will be pre-compiled for emacs22 and it will not run with emacs21. So, if emacs22 is installed emacs21 is useless, but emacs21 can not be removed because of gnus' dependency on it.
