found 432947 394-4 thanks Same here on etch. It works well with UTF-8 but seems to guess itself the encoding of some files and do not honors LESSCHARSET.
As far as i can see, only files that "file" (the command) tell to be "myfile: UTF-8 Unicode text" are displayed correctly. François
