Hi Martin,
thanks for submitting a proposal to improve the list archives!
Posts in the archive have a Message-Id header with a link to the
current URL. That's kind of useless. Instead, it would be great if
the URL could point to
http://lists.d.o/msgid-search/$the_message_id, so that it's easier
to obtain a truely permanent link for any given post.
The links in the list archive are specified to be stable.
We do keep an eye on that (including diffing of index files for the
last upgrades of mhonarc) and I would fully expect the msgid-search
to be among the first things to break when they change.
That said, I think there are some (10 of 10000 or so) months where
the numbering is currently broken and will have to change once.
One problem of making msgid-search the default is crossposting, also
the current implementation scheme is optimized for indexing rather
than retrieval (this will likely change though)...
So, if the only goal is to have an URL to refer to, you could use the
current links. If there are other reasons to prefer the links to
point to msgid-search, please don't hesitate to add them to the bug
log.
Kind regards
T.
