Anyway, version 1.14.12 installed seamlessly, so you can close the bug I 
guess.

This is quite bizarre.  Would you please run the install under
strace -f ?  Eg,
   strace -vvs500 -fostrace dpkg -i dselect_1.14.11_i386.deb
