Correction:  It isn't timing.  It crashes when the X screen is visible
while the session is being started up, it doesn't matter if X was
started from console or if I'm logging in from gdm.

As long as I'm in the console during session startup, there is no crash.
This means it also works when I'm logging in from gdm, switch to console
immediately and wait until it's started up before switching back to X.
