I'm having this problem as well (on Ubuntu Gutsy though) and I think I can provide some additional information I found on the internet:

This problem only occurs when the search base is the root of the ldap database (eg. dc=example,dc=net) but disappears when the search base is restricted to 1 level deeper (eg. ou=Users,dc=example,dc=net).

Another way to make the core dumps go away is adding "referrals no" in the nss-ldap.conf, but then my "getent group" returns several groups (far from all) correctly but never exits (unless I set a timelimit on searches).

From what I've read it has something to do with referral chasing but I'm afraid my ldap knowledge doesn't go that far. I hope someone could continue the investigation in this bug with this added information. Plenty of messages can be found on the net by people with the same problem, noone with solutions though :(
Regards,

Jelmer Jaarsma
