Exit code 3 is normal. Read the man page; that just means that the filesystem was modified and it was the root filesystem, so the system should reboot. So you're not doing a clean shutdown (hence the "heeds recovery") and that's confusing e2fsck into thinking it needs to do a full check so it can backup the superblock. Oops. That's a bug.
