Thanks, with your info and help from the rsync mailing list it's been resolved; newer systems *can* in fact set mtimes on symbolic links, and -5.1 was built on a system that supports that. The configure script detected that, and enabled support for that. However, when running on an older system, it fails with the error you see. A -6 version has been uploaded that ignores any such error message. Additionally it appeared that the 5.1 version did not in fact fix the security issue due to a misunderstanding about the way patches are handled by the rsync build.
