python2.3 has been removed from the archive a while ago  (before Etch
release).

What I do not understand is why you seem to have used python2.3
while /usr/bin/python was already linked to /usr/bin/python2.4 (see
python -V).

Not a common situation, but it can happen again.

I will thus leave this bug open with a wontfix tag so that people having
the same issue can find it.
