You filed this bug against OpenAFS a little over a year ago. There is now a much newer version of OpenAFS in testing which fixes quite a few problems of this type. I think that it may have fixed your problem, but I don't have an Alpha to try a build with. Could you give this another try (with whatever kernel that you're using at this point; I'm not sure how many people are still using 2.4.23 and am not sure how much the issues change during the 2.4.x development cycle on Alpha) and see if you're still having problems?
