I'm experiencing the same problem as the submitter. I tracked it down to the fact that I'm using a 2.6.24-rc3 kernel, where uname -m reports "x86".This was an issue in upstream kernels only for a very short time and IIRC was not even part of the official -rc3 release itself.I'm running 2.6.24-rc4 now and get: $ uname -m x86_64
I'm using the kernel-dists trunk repository, so it's an issue there. What's present there is linux-image-2.6.24-rc3-amd64, and that uses "x86". Maybe poking the kernel team will get them to fix that; the more important issue for me is that CONFIG_NO_HZ is set. Please also note that config.guess seems to be broken as well.
The kernel team might not consider this very important, since the package is not in the official archive, but they might want to know anyway. It's not important enough to me to report.
