Clamav should complete this opperation in a short time, but for some
reason it enters a state where even after hours it will not complete and
appears to be in deadlock (possibly with fresh clam). The only solution
when this begins to happen appears to be to purge the package entirely
and reinstall it from scratch.

Please upgrade. The slow reload issue is fixed in newer versions.
Newer versions are available from volatile.debian.org.

Thanks,

Thank you, I will make a backport in our customs repo from the volatile package.

Do you possibly have a time frame for which the newer versions will enter Etch?
