This is what I did:
To preserve my Pidgin setup, contacts, blist etc I actually moved just
the pref.xml file out of the way, and kept the /.pidgin folder
untouched. I then loaded all plugins one at a time and Pidgin still
performed well. Then I edited the new pref.xml file to only contain the
plugins of my original file (only 18 plugins).
Pidgin now runs without problems so far.

To me this suggests that my prefs.xml file was corrupted in some other
way than by some plugin.
