Problem lies on setting up the correct AGP Aperture Size in BIOS. On my mainboard ASRock K7VT4A Pro (VIA KT400A) I had to set the size to 256 MB. Then the drvier starts without any error message. But there is a problem with OpenGL: starting any application that uses OpenGL (i.e. Google Earth) leads to a system freeze. glxinfo however shows the correct OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
