Hum, surprising. Do you have any other kernel module like this one loaded?
IIRC, thinkpad-acpi was ibm-acpi in earlier kernels.

Any of them? But one of them should be enabled by default on X startup.

What does
    xrandr --prop
report after startup?
Is it different if thinkpad-acpi is loaded or not?
