rzip is a top performer, and if I recall correctly, Andrew Tridgell said it shouldn't be too hard to make rzip forward compressed data to stdout so it works as a filter! It seems to me that with its outstanding performance, if it also became a filter, rzip could become more popular than all other data compression utilities.
