Comments/Problems:

To Whom It May Concern

A few months back, I obtained a PowerMac, G4, QuickSilver (2002) computer.
Although the Aqua interface is cute, I would like to install a real
operating sustem on it--have added a 160 GB Maxtor drive to it. I have
Debian "sarge" on an HP, Pentium III, Vectra VLi8, running Motif (will
upgrade it to 'stable' = "etch" when I have another machine running), and
would like to set up similar ("etch", at least) on the G4. My efforts
to date have been very frustrating--but have achieved success--read on.

1) downloaded the etch netinst CD image and created a CD.
Could not get the installer to start (hung up after usb initiallizations)
2) downloaded the etch CD-1 image and created a CD.
Could not get the installer to start (hung up after usb initiallizations)
   MD5SUMs all ok.
Since one cannot boot from an HFS+ formated harddisk (and the Mac will not
format harddrives in less than HFS+):
3) copied the USB stick startup info to a zip drive (which could be
formatted to just HFS) and was able to get that installer to load and start
   a netinst *** WOW *** some success:

However - could not get the file downloads to complete
        - most just stopped at 20%, 40%, 80% of loading - it varies
        - about 2 times out of 20 got through and installation then hung up
during the next step (either evaluate hardware or disk drives)
Was reading web info re yaboot and startup problems, and found a reference
to using a different kernel, as ATA drivers were different *** Ahaaa ***

Went to "sarge" images (figured older version may have older drivers):
  - netinst not possible as unstable points to sid, not sarge (your info)
4) downloaded sarge CD-1
    - booted beautifully to installer, thought I was home
    - ran into partman bug (#244926) and could not repartition/reconfigure the
      new harddrive. :-(

One of the error messages was about not being able to write the partition
map. I slept on this and realized my partitioning was not leaving any
    space for a partition map.

Went back to the Mac OS X, partitioned the 160 GB disk (only seeing
130 Gb of it) 2 MB boot, 2 GB swap, 30 GB root, ~90 GB home.

When reinstallation came to partitioning the hard disk, I just left the
partitions as they came from the Mac OS (it had put about 8 MB at the
beginning and some 8 MB between the partitions (journal files??)).
Each of the desired partitions came up as 2, 4, 6, 8: I added the
last 30 GB as 9, mount point /opt --probably could have eliminated the
interpartition 8 MB spaces, but just left it, not wanting to change any
    more than necessary.
Changed the partition formats and names (in 2, 4, 6, 8, 9) to what I
wanted (Mac boot format for boot, swap for swap, and ext2 for root, home,
and opt (probably could have used ext3, but had tried ext3 initially
and saw many log error messages re ext3 and journaling when getting
partman errors so wanted to avoid any more problems).

Anyway-- this configuration of the disk went through the installation
beautifully and I was able to complete the istallation without any
other problems. When installation asked about distribution, I picked
"stable", so don't know at this point whether I still have sarge, or
etch, or a mixture. Kernel is 2,6,8-3.

So I think the partman bug, well documented via Google, was really a
failure to partition the disk properly, the powerpc requiring space
for the partition map and perhaps other info.

Thought you might like to know my experiences. Still don't know why
"etch" wouldn't load initially. Was it checking the harddisk early
on and not finding a partition map?? Pehaps you can tell me.
