But my root account and my girlfriend's account were able to view the chm
file just fine.  It's the same machine.  In other words, xchm seems to work
for two users on this machine, and doesn't work for one user on this
machine.

That's why I thought blowing away the xchm dot-file would've worked.

It's the same machine.   :)

As I already mentioned above, I absent mindedly used an xterm that had a
root shell.
