The problem seems to be with gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, as I've also verified that by removing it completely there's no need to downgrade gstreamer0.10-plugins-base -- in my case, mp3 playback continues to work since I have gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 installed. According to a gstreamer-devel message at http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.gstreamer.devel/19378 the bug is fixed in ugly's CVS.
