It's a well known fact that mixing the kernel foofb driver with Xorg foo driver can break. You basically have 2 drivers talking to the same hardware without synchronizing each other. You should not expect this to be resolved soon. About your current ATI 6.6.193 driver, you might want to take 6.7.196 in experimental. But I don't think it will change anything for the above problem.
