Thank you for the report. However, the bug has been fixed in 5.16.00 and upward. See for example deb http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root unstable main non-free (packages are available for i386, amd64, mips, hppa) The problem was, that the configure script looked for GSL version number in of the form X.Y (where X and Y are single digits), which will fail for the current GSL 1.10 in Debian. A new set of packages should be uploaded to "experimental" soon.
