5.37-5 has the same problem:

(Reading database ... 254670 files and directories currently installed.)

5.36-8 has a bigger problem:

(Reading database ... 254670 files and directories currently installed.)

What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
    Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
    N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.

According to 5.36(-8), neither of the drives support SMART and fail:

But according to 5.37(-6), both drives do support SMART, and only the
second one fails:

Note that with the current version in Debian the second, failing drive
isn't in the database, while the first, working drive is. Also note that
both drives have SMART enabled nevertheless, according to the output. I
suppose the problem is related to smartctl not fully understanding the WD
drive. WD5000-AAKS a very common model though.

Thanks for your time,

  Wouter
