I think it's just a lockup of the window manager looking like a lockup
of X. In any case the ctrl-alt-f? shortcuts still worked, the mouse
pointer was still being drawn correctly and I could still move it, but
nothing in the interface was actually doing anything when I tried to
click on it. Not on the windows, not inside the applications, though the
last time this happened was with azureus, which was still updating on
screen (% counters changing and such) even though I couldn't interact
with it.

In any case, I have now upgraded the wm and not seen any problems since.
