The behavior also occurs on a third Etch box, but ONLY when I edit the greeting text from the gdm screen by clicking on the 'options' button that let's one to xcdmp, etc. When I work at a properly logged in debian-gnome session and select:
Applications->Debian->Apps->System->GDM Setup I get the same editting screen, but in this case it works as it should.
