This reminds me of something. xfwm4 4.4.1 is known do deadlock with gtk 2.12.
IIRC it has not transitionned yet to testing, but would you have installed it
from another source, or something like that?

If you have gtk 2.12, you'll need xfwm4 4.4.1-3 at least. (pick the one from
unstable if possible).

Yep:

$ dpkg -l libgtk2.0* | grep ^ii
ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.0-3 The GTK+ graphical user interface library
ii libgtk2.0-bin 2.10.13-1 The programs for the GTK+ graphical user int
ii libgtk2.0-common 2.12.0-3 Common files for the GTK+ graphical user int
ii libgtk2.0-dev 2.12.0-3 Development files for the GTK+ library

$ sudo grep libgtk2.0 /var/log/dpkg.log.1 | grep " installed"
2007-10-22 10:16:10 status installed libgtk2.0-common 2.12.0-3
2007-10-22 10:16:10 status installed libgtk2.0-0 2.12.0-3
2007-10-22 10:16:10 status installed libgtk2.0-dev 2.12.0-3

This exactly seems to be the critical time. I'll try to stress test
my 384kBit DSL to get the packages from unstable. Chances are good that
this is the reason for the trouble.

Thanks for the hint - I'll report success or failure and will close the
bug in case it is solved.

Kind regards

           Andreas.
