I believe this is a bug in gnome-panel. I have often noticed that it
seems to lose the ability to notice that new panel applets have been
installed, until I log in again (whereupon it stops working after a few
days again...)

Similarly, I have noticed that if I try to add an applet to my panel,
the 'Add' button seemingly does nothing. Since there is no other
feedback, I click it a few times. Then, when I log in again, there are
three or four copies of the desired applet on my panel...
