KP> Yeah, looking at the two images it's fairly clear that you're using a
KP> different font for chinese in the new environment. Check your terminal
KP> configuration to see which font family it's using, then compare

my terminal, uxterm is fine, iceweasel is what suffers.

KP> $ fc-match <terminal-family>:lang=zh

Anyway, I don't know how to determine iceweasel's terminal family.

KP> between 2.4.2-1.2, 2.4.2-1.4 and and 2.4.91-1 if you can.

KP> Let's figure out which font you're ending up with; there are two
KP> separate bugs here, the first is that fontconfig selected a new font,
KP> the second is that your application is mis-drawing it. What application
KP> is that?

iceweasel, which looks fine now that I downgraded from ugly 2.4.2-1.4
and 2.4.91-1 to 2.4.2-1.2.

You can give me lines to feed to the shell to determine those black
areas of what questions there are to answer.
For now I shall do
# ls *2.4.2-1.2*|sed s/_.*/\ hold/|dpkg --set-selections
