You are right, I didn't do the upgrade because of all the stuff that carries with it, so I'm still at -1 > This is not necessarily because of the xine-lib source package, but > because of apt now installing recommends by default. If you really care > about all this stuff not being installed by default, you need to track > down the dependency graph of recommends, and file bugs to demote > respective recommends to suggest. (And I'm sure there are bugs to be > filed here). You are partially right here again, but setting APT::Install-Recommends false only partially solves the problem: pul:~# apt-get dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done The following NEW packages will be installed: gnome-mime-data libfam0 libgnomevfs2-0 libgnomevfs2-common libhal-storage1 libwavpack1 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-shm0 libxcb-xv0 libxcb1 libxine1-console libxine1-gnome libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-plugins libxine1-x shared-mime-info The following packages will be upgraded: libxine1 1 upgraded, 16 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B/6613kB of archives. After unpacking 14.9MB of additional disk space will be used. I still get the gnome stuff here which was my complaint from the beginning. > Have you tried manually installing/upgrading libxine1-misc before the > dist-upgrade? It should be possible now to install xine without that > load of additional packages you mentioned above. Since you really want a > minimal system, I'd suggest you to configure apt to not install > recommends. Yes, I have tried, this is what happens if I try to install just the libxine1-x package: pul:~# apt-get install libxine1-x Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: libwavpack1 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-shm0 libxcb-xv0 libxcb1 libxine1 libxine1-misc-plugins Suggested packages: gxine Recommended packages: libxine1-doc libxine-doc The following packages will be REMOVED: libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-xvdr xine-ui The following NEW packages will be installed: libwavpack1 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-shm0 libxcb-xv0 libxcb1 libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-x The following packages will be upgraded: libxine1 1 upgraded, 7 newly installed, 3 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B/3005kB of archives. After unpacking 4108kB disk space will be freed. As you see I'm loosing all xine stuff I had, only if I install libxine1-x and libxine1-misc-plugins I get to what I suppose is the desirable behaviour: pul:~# apt-get install libxine1-x libxine1-misc-plugins Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: libwavpack1 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-shm0 libxcb-xv0 libxcb1 libxine1 Suggested packages: gxine Recommended packages: libxine1-doc libxine-doc The following NEW packages will be installed: libwavpack1 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-shm0 libxcb-xv0 libxcb1 libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-x The following packages will be upgraded: libxine1 1 upgraded, 7 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B/3005kB of archives. After unpacking 713kB of additional disk space will be used. But that came after some try and error, where I saw that installing libxine1-plugins was dropping in the gnome stuff and that libxine1-misc-plugins was the one replacing libxine1. > Do you agree that this bug can just be closed? Well, I really think this could be done in a way that it would be simpler for us to get the system not too flooded with not wanted stuff, at least when you are only trying to upgrade a lib (libxine1) without apt installing all the recommends. If you feel that there is no way to get this easier for the user wanting just a minimal thing, then you can close it.
