I suppose I got the Depends: wrong once again.  But you can safely install
r-base-core from unstable, it is a few weeks old and installs and runs fine
on testing:

$ sudo apt-get -t unstable r-base-core 

and likewise for other package from the r-base source such as r-base-dev or
r-mathlib.

Unfortunately, I cannot get the current foreign out of testing, and we no
longer have R 2.5.1 to build against.  So you'll need to wait, or upgrade as
indicated above.
