I just upgraded to the following versions (current sarge):

ii debian-el 24.10-1 Emacs helpers specific to Debian users
ii emacs21 21.4a-1 The GNU Emacs editor
ii emacs21-bin-co 21.4a-1 The GNU Emacs editor's shared, architecture
ii emacs21-common 21.4a-1 The GNU Emacs editor's shared, architecture
ii emacsen-common 1.4.16 Common facilities for all emacsen

Unfortunately, I can still see the problem. I will try
this at home again (current sid), maybe the machine here
at work is administered strangely.
