Ugh.  Thank you for pointing this out.  I accepted a patch to build
32-bit libraries on 64-bit platforms, and I have had nothing but
trouble.  I should have studied it more carefully.  I'll fix this and
make sure that everything is really the way it is supposed to be.
I'll also apply this patch to 3.8.  Thanks again for reporting it.
