when the ttf-bitstream-vera package is installed, OpenOffice.org displays some latin characters incorrectly. This is the case even in the menus. When exporting the file to a PDF document, the PDF is affected as well. For example, ç is replaced by Á, and è is replaced by Ë. As these characters are very common in French, this makes OOo unusable for any serious work in this language. When manually selecting another font (like DejaVu Sans) or removing the ttf-bitstream-vera package, these characters are displayed correctly.
