Actually as long as you have the v4l comapt layer built into the
kernel (which is the case in debian kernels) you can use any device as
a v4l device IIRC.

So the problem lies in the backend.

Can you give a try to xcam, which is a SANE frontend dedicated to v4l
devices ?

Also, try setting SANE_DEBUG_V4L=255 and see if you can get any useful
error message.
