I came up with this: http://rafb.net/p/9uvgUu84.html This will maintain backward compatibility, it is however impossible to pass -M to the real ssh because in the debian version -M takes precedence over environment. I do not like the idea of env taking precedence over command line, as this seems to be the case for -M being used.
