And the answer is:
Since the iP1500 printer drivers were converted from rpms via
"alien," the resulting debians have dependencies that are derived
from the system configuration that was present at the time alien was
originally run.
The fix for this is to install the newer file, in this case
libglib1.2lbl; this may involve removing the old driver packages first.
Afterwards, run alien again on the rpms. The debs generated by alien
will contain current dependencies and can be installed.
If there's a more general fix for this problem, I don't know what it
might be. Ignoring dependencies and installing the old debians will
result in a system configuration that constantly complains about the
old debians; I don't recommend that method.
