Same problem here. I removed a 2nd mouse entry from my xorg.conf and
restarted gdm and the behaviour is still bizarre.
Here's my current mouse configuration from my xorg.conf:

Running lsof on /dev/input/mice shows Xorg accessing the device twice. Is
this correct behaviour?
$sudo lsof /dev/input/mice
