But that is the whole crux of the matter, they _don't_ depend on it.
It's not a stretch of the imagination, or any technicality, they just
really, simply, don't. Only packages that use it depend on it, and
they should have a proper build-dep of their own. People building
3rd party unpackaged source need to find and install the correct
build deps manually like they always have had (and probably always
will have) to do.

It is not hidden at all, it is optional, and quite correctly so.
When you select a -dev package with the tool of your choice, you'll
get a "people who installed this .deb also installed..." message of
some variety.

All you have to do is say yes or no. You said no. In your case it
was the wrong answer. That is not so for everyone.

Debian isn't a make world distribution where you get everything shoved
down your throat whether you want it or not, and the places where it
is a bit like that are major bugs IMO.

So I'm sorry, but I really do see it as totally backward to suggest
that we force this package on everyone, whether they need or want it
or not, for no better reason than to work around your habit of ignoring
suggested packages.

Do you really think it would not be better to just fix a habit that has
proven to cause you trouble?

And no I'm not trying to lecture, I'm just trying to put some context
on the big picture of what you are asking for. You are asking me to
consider your ability to not think about what you install more important
than other people's ability to install just what they need. And I don't
really think that's the direction that the balance should tip...

This isn't about hiding wxwin.m4 because its a monstrosity, that was a
totally separate insider tip all of its own. This is about providing,
or rather maintaining, an accurate description of the actual package
inter-relationships that exist.

I confidently doubt that you will make this particular mistake again,
and in the absence of other people also making it, it is difficult to
generalise on what more might help yet ...

I guess we'll see. It's me, not you, that will get the angry email
if they do in any case ;)
