Yes, you're right. Actually, upstream developers are already aware of
this, and compiling against libsqlite is one of upstream's goals for
future releases. Quoting Mauricio Piacentini (the main upstream
developer) in a mail he sent to me:

However, Mauricio Piacentini is very busy at the moment working for
KDE, so this will probably not be done until the release of KDE4 at
the end of the year.
