Thanks Brice. Indeed it turns out people are having this problem even with older Xorgs - it's a bug in the latest nvidia drivers. Doing some research I found this: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=7858bb6d26391d3abf310c8788143778&t=99016 which suggests that I can work around the problem by explicitly disabling "composite."
