Hi, After changing from Ubuntu to Debian, it seemed I could no longer burn DVDs. CDs worked fine though, and the hardware hadn't changed a bit. A few seconds after writing "started", there was a read/write failure. I lost roughly 10 DVDs this way, trying various settings and permissions (through 'su', not 'chmod', so I'm confident that the conclusion is sound). The solution was to set manually the writing speed instead of leaving it to "Auto" (which worked with Ubuntu 7.04, same batch of DVDs). It tried to burn at 8.2x but the DVDs are meant for 1-8x. Optimization gone wrong. BTW, I saw quite a few pages on the Internet about this very same problem, although the solution is almost never suggested. Perhaps it would be best to try and be slightly less aggressive in setting the Auto speed.
