This produces the following entries:

Sep 20 17:42:35 messages dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.rc15 starting up
Sep 20 17:42:49 messages dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<XXXXXX>,

Sep 20 17:42:49 messages dovecot: POP3(XXXXXX): mbox:

Sep 20 17:42:49 messages dovecot: POP3(XXXXXX): Couldn't open INBOX: Internal
error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2007-09-20 17:42:49]
Sep 20 17:42:49 messages dovecot: POP3(XXXXXX): No INBOX for user top=0/0,
retr=0/0, del=0/0, size=0

I checked the permissions of /var/mail/XXXXXX and all files in
/home/mailuser/XXXXXX/mail/. Everything is correct, all files and
directories belong to the user account of the mailbox. The user only
uses the mailbox in /var/mail/, there are no folders in ~/mail/ and only
POP3 polling takes place.

Best,
René.
